Harry Fairhead is from the Tax Payer's Alliance and said: "We pay a lot to have the roads repaired. On average, Council Tax has gone up by 58% in real terms in the last twenty year so we pay a lot of money. We pay again when a car hits a pothole and a compensation claim is rightly made - so we pay twice.

"In very rural areas like Cornwall your car might be your only practical way of getting around so if the Council isn't looking after the roads and you put your car into a pothole and break the axel, you're in serious trouble."
