The TaxPayers’ Alliance (TPA) welcomed George Osborne’s plans for
a council tax freeze, and invited the Shadow Chancellor to take up the
TPA’s numerous proposals on how savings can be made.

Matthew Elliott Chief Executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said:

"It’s
great news for taxpayers that George Osborne has promised a council tax
freeze, and it’s even better news that he has committed to making
serious savings in Whitehall. He’s right to say that there are huge
savings that can be made by cutting out waste and putting a stop to
unnecessary spending. We have plenty of proposals of how to make those
savings, and we look forward to George Osborne carrying them out. He
may be surprised, but there are so many savings that can be made we’re
confident he will be able to go further and afford tax cuts."

    Let’s be clear about this.
He has not proposed a freeze on council tax, he’s merely said that central government (ie US) will make up the increase in council tax rather than it being passed on directly to us by the council.
So it’s not making councils spend less, just shifting it around – like Browns old tricks. Let’s not forget that the old rates also included water – another 25% about the present council tax rate.
By all means make the cuts that he talks about in PR & Consultants – but there’s a heck of a lot more beyond that. Action needs to be taken to stop councils of all parties running amok as they have done for the last 10 years.
We all know there’s an absolute fortune to be saved in government spending – WITHOUT affecting services.
I can remember not so long ago when the tories were banging on about the need for small government – let’s see some of that please!
