Clown City Insanity has broken out in Torbay council.  As a report from the Sun discloses today, John Doble collects gold particles in his workshop and sends them onto a dealer – effectively recycling the gold.  Torbay council, cue your pantomime season boos, stepped in and said the gold has to be thrown away because it constitutes ‘commercial waste’.

On top of this, if Mr Doble doesn’t throw the gold away, he’ll be fined £5,000 by the council!

Blakey Santa clearly needs to bring a well needed shot of common sense to someone at Torbay council.  Blakey would be proud of this interfering.  It’s typical of the dozy, meddling attitude rife in government today.  Earn an honest crust, or try to in today’s economic climate, and the bureaucrats and snoopers set out to fleece you.

Like all of these stories, we encourage you to let the leader or elected Mayor of the council know about the rank stupidity of rules and decisions made at their council and ask them to put a stop to it.  The elected Mayor of Torbay is Nick Bye.

Breath taking to say the least, surely this is the lead contender for the public sector stupidity awards!

This is what I’ve sent to His Worship the Mayor of Torbay
“And you are ( ultimately) responsible for making decisions like this.
Are you aware that when a gold mine is de commissioned every part of the processing structure is disposed of in such a way as to glean as much gold as possible, that will have accumulated in all the nooks and crannies of the equpiment.
Isn’t the whole concept of recycling to do with disposal of commercial waste. Some of it can be re cycled some can’t.
So what about hairdressers who sell their clippings for wigs etc. What about butchers and slaughter houses who sell their bones and offal for other purposes. What about the stables that sell manure.
Haven’t you got anything more constructive to do, like looking for someone who hasn’t recycled their plastic properly or dogs fouling the beaches or how about looking for untaxed cars….the list is endless.
I bet if our man was to put his gold waste in his wheelie bin it wouldn’t reach the council waste tip

If this was not so stupid it would be laughable. Torbay council should use just a little bit of common sense. Gold particles cannot possibly be described as “commercial waste”. If they do not retract John should melt it down and use it himself.

    Gold is Waste in Torbay!?
    Dear Sir,
We hope you would look into this decision and reasons therefore. Obviously waste of any materials or resources should be discouraged and recyclng should be assisted and encouraged and no doubt it is a misunderstanding. BUT there is an attitude within the public sector that the customer is always wrong and should be penalised etc where possible. There is a major ground swell of resistance to this attitude which people in your position should be concerned about and take heed of. Thanking you in anticipation of satisfactory outcome.
    Yours Sincerely Mike Cross

this is not stupid, it is rancid. civil servants should be civil and serve the public. they are about as democratic as cancer these days. the reason why these town hall wastrels do this is they know they get away with it and treat the very people who fund them with contempt.
i would execute each and every petit hitler come the revolution

    Andrew
if you must post, please understand the terms you are using first. Local council official are not CIVIL servants, but can be Public Servants. CIVIL SERVANTS work only for Central Government Departments and their agencies.
As for the Gold – there is a findamental difference between “waste” and “scrap”. Scrap has an intrinsic and recoverable value and should never be thrown away. Gold is scrap. Councils don’t remove scrap, they only remove waste. Therefore it’s none of the council’s business what he does with his scrap metal.

    dear dog tired
thanks for your correction. i would amend my comments to say
“Public servants should serve the interests of the public and not waste the taxpayers’ money”
the fact that there is actually a need to flag the difference highlights the point. Civil or public. there are too many of them interfering with those who fund the society they interfere with on such a regular basis.

The increase was largely due to reduced taxes and increased social benefit payments due to the stimulus package.
