Council workers given fully-paid time off to 'volunteer'

Rage Aargh!  What is it with the lunatics in our Town Halls?  First Worcestershire County Council employs bureaucrats to tell people how to dish up their dinner, now Cheltenham Borough Council are giving their council staff time off to do volunteer work.  To rub salt in the taxpayers wound – they’ll be fully paid while they 'volunteer'.

You can read the story here.

On that note, please ask the Council leader, Cllr Stephen Jordan, why he thinks it’s acceptable for council workers to take fully-paid time off to gallivant around the borough on the taxpayer’s dime.

North Tyneside Council has a similar scheme. Thirty senior management staff [ to be increased to 100 third tier managers] are allowed 12 days [ie 90 hours ] paid leave a year to work in voluntary and community sectors; the Chief Executive is already doing this.

I'd like Councillor Jordan to volunteer to collect my dustbin, which should have been collected by Cheltenham Borough Council yesterday.

Councils should stick to doing the basics properly, instead of squandering taxpayers' money in this fashion. Cheltenham Borough Council has a shocking record of wasting money on ridiculous schemes like its late and unlamented Noddy Train and - not once, but twice - gambling and losing £millions on interest rate speculation.

It must rank as one of the very worst councils in Britain.
