A family immigration detention centre which has cost the taxpayer at least £30million is being shut after managing just 16 deportations in two years.

Ex-deputy prime minister Nick Clegg demanded the opening of the Cedars unit in 2011.

He said the centre – which boasts facilities for children including table football, games consoles, snooker and musical instruments – was a ‘necessary part of a civilised but effective immigration system’.
