Harry Davis, campaign manager at the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "Public sector spending in the last decade have grown out of control, so it's important for police forces to have competent staff who can get a grip on the finances.

"But when budgets are as tight as they are, the Derbyshire PCC needs to be able to justify to local residents why this position is being offered at almost three times the national average salary.

"Council tax already takes huge chunks out of taxpayers' pockets so they need to be sure that their hard earned cash is going towards front line services and not in puffed-up pay packets."
