Motorists are one of the most overtaxed groups in the UK and face sky-high fuel bills.
They can at least claim a tax free allowance from their employers if they use their car for work, but many council employees receive well in excess of this rate.
For the first time, we have collated the mileage payments made by every local authority in the UK and found that many council employees on Local Government Employers Association agreed terms and conditions are able to claim 25p per mile more than the HMRC Approved Mileage Allowance payment of 40p per mile.
