Hold a referendum on fundamental renegotiation of the EU – 0/5

Shortly before the last General Election, the TaxPayers’ Alliance produced a manifesto. Here is the latest in our series of posts looking at how the Coalition Government has performed in relation to our recommendations.

Clearly a referendum hasn’t happened, and won’t happen, within this Parliament. But David Cameron has said that he will hold one by the end of 2017 if he returns to Downing Street. An In/Out referendum with the real threat of leaving the EU is crucial, otherwise our negotiating hand will be nullified.

Overall, the direction of travel should be towards a looser association with the EU, based on free trade rather than political integration. We have scored 0 simply because a referendum hasn’t happened, although we are greatly encouraged that one is on the horizon.
