Council Tax Campaign
Feb 2012 23

As part of a nationwide campaign against planned Council Tax rises we are highlighting research and official statistics to put the proposed increases in context and suggest some areas where savings could be made instead.

Many households are struggling with the rising cost of living yet are finding out that their local council has put forward plans to increase Council Tax, ignoring the Government’s offer of help to pay for a freeze.

Council Tax is second only to VAT as the most burdensome tax for the poorest households. Most local authorities have chosen to freeze rates while some, like the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, have chosen to help local families by cutting rates.  Those politicians proposing rises have instead decided to increase the burden on already hard-pressed families.

Click on the council below to see more information about where savings could be made:

Stoke on Trent is making a 3.49% increase in spite of this being one of the worst paid cities in Britain; at the same time they are planning to spend £4.6 million on grandiose schemes to ‘regenerate’ the city by bulldozing thriving businesses to build a mega-complex of shops, luxury flats, a cinema and offices – when we have 25% of existing commercial property lying empty, and an existing retail centre which they have given permission to expand by building on more shops, offices, and a cinema.  Oh, and obliterating the city’s car parking, which leaves me wondering where this massive influx of shoppers and cinema-goers will park…

Help needed I have just recieved a letter from baliffs stating that they are returning my council tax debt to LBWF to take commital proceedings or to make me bankrupt?
In 2011/12 I started my own business but thanks to the lovely people at Job Centre + they cheated me out of the 50+ In work training grant that I needed to set up my business.
So I signed off benefits and the only income I ahd was the working tax credits of £54 so should have been entitled to both H/B + CCTAX but the housing office took my potential income, not my actual income of £54 p week so now I ahve horrendous rent arrears and CC Tax debt which in reality I should not have.
My current situation is a s follows I ahve a business all set up but cannot operate on just £60 p wk on reduced JSA benefits, have horrendous debts that I should not have and am stuck on JSA benefits.
I do not want to be on benefits
So my question is this canthey send me to prison for £400 Council Tax debt which is wrong What can I do about it?
    Thanks guys
