The TaxPayers’ Alliance accused the authority of handing out “fat cat salaries” after The Sentinel revealed plans to bring in a second-in-command to chief executive John van de Laarschot.
The lobbying group’s political director Jonathan Isaby said: “People in Stoke-in-Trent will be astounded that after the council has had to make hundreds of workers on average wages redundant that the money is suddenly there to pay a six-figure salary to a new senior bureaucrat.
“Ordinary families are having to watch the pennies and the same should go for local councils too.
“Any council should be prioritising the funding of frontline services. Civic leaders in Stoke-on-Trent will have a lot of explaining to do if they are to convince council tax payers that paying fat cat salaries to additional managers is the best use of their hard-earned money.”
