Emma Boon, the campaign director of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Peers get a huge taxpayer subsidy on meals. It’s scandalous that they are complaining about it when they get such a good deal on food and drink.
“Many taxpayers have seen the cost of feeding themselves and their children rocket. It’s high time these subsidies were ended and peers lived in the real world.”

A TaxPayers’ Alliance spokesman said: “It’s fine for the BBC to offer guests a cup of tea or provide coffee at long meetings but certainly the refreshments bill as a whole does look big.
“The Beeb is making some of the right moves but could go further, for example by looking at cheaper alternatives to costly water coolers.”
