Emma Boon, of the Taxpayers’ Alliance, said: “It’s especially cheeky of the Chancellor to slap VAT on a pasty, knowing he can enjoy one subsidised at our expense.

“MPs earn a decent salary. There’s no reason for taxpayers to pay for their lunch too.”
