Matthew Sinclair, speaking on behalf of the Taxpayers’ Alliance campaign group, said the current public sector pension level “just isn’t sustainable”.

“They can’t keep passing this kind of bill to taxpayers. They’re asking private sector taxpayers, most of whom don’t get anything like as generous provision, to pay about £700 a family towards public sector pensions,” he said.
