Jonathan Isaby, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “People should be expected to take responsibility for their own health as far as possible and prescribing drugs for some of these addictions should be the last resort rather than the norm.

“While addicts may need medication, it is not necessarily a silver bullet as they also require willpower, which is sadly not available on the NHS.”
