Scilly chief executive suspended

Following last week’s report on council ‘employment issues’ in the Isles of Scilly, their chief executive Philip Hygate has been suspended from his £100,000 post to allow an investigation into his conduct. The decision has been welcome by local activists.

‘Our group name stands for Honesty, Ethics, Accountability, Respect and Transparency in local governance,’ says Frances Grottick of HEART of Scilly action group. ‘As such, we support our elected members on their decision to look at the serious allegations which have been raised.’

Following the council meeting held in secret, the matters under investigation are believed to include a ‘climate of fear’ in the islands and his claim for accumulated leave. A councillor attending the meeting claimed the Scilly community was ‘rife with unease’.

An official statement from the Town Hall declared ‘this suspension does not constitute disciplinary action. It is a neutral act.’ Says an anonymous islander: ‘I can’t see him coming back from this.’Following last week’s report on council ‘employment issues’ in the Isles of Scilly, their chief executive Philip Hygate has been suspended from his £100,000 post to allow an investigation into his conduct.
