SIR – The TaxPayers’ Alliance report on the sugar tax seems to have missed the point.
The levy is being introduced to help reduce the sugar in fizzy drinks. These products are the single biggest contributor of sugar to children’s diets, accounting for one third of daily consumption. Fizzy drinks are fuelling the serious epidemics of childhood obesity and dental decay.
It is therefore not arbitrary, as the TPA suggests. The idea that children are getting their sugar intake from drinking expensive coffees at Starbucks misrepresents this socially responsible measure, which is aimed at improving young people’s health.
