How many countries have a start date for their tax date on a random day of the month as 6th April? I could if I sat down point out numerous such inconsistencies loosing the tax payer Billions. This is little to do with long term or short term!
Lack of managerial acumen is the problem.

Sorting out the Greek crisis is peanuts compared to sorting out the NHS. NO OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD runs their health service like the NHS. Right next to us France has a top rated service & so do most similar European countries. Australia, Newzealand, Canada all have highly rated systems. Why doesn’t the government take a leaf from their book? This is because government policy is “Experiment & Destroy”. As one experiment concludes another starts!

If HS2 is scrapped what will happen to all that loss of profit to private companies & their consultants (in the house of commons) & to those MP’s who might lose in the elections but will be able to get a nice earner on the board of such companies.

Government ministers & civil servants jobs & salaries are linked to the budgets they command. Reduce their budgets & ability to waste & they lose they positions & salaries.
Why not reduce taxation & let individuals & companies decide how they spend their money? It will never happen! Not unless democracy is allowed to prevail.
Legislation that ring fences the maximum amount the government can extract from a tax payer in all forms of direct, indirect taxes, social security contributions, road tax, TV tax etc to a maximum of 30% of an individuals income will restore some form of democracy.
If any party offers this I will vote for them!

Frank, reading the news & media only 3% of first time buyers are able to get onto the property ladder. Obviously with such low effective demand, supply side will not build the houses. It is very instructive to visit a new property build, I would recommend it to all taxpayers. Most of the properties are being purchased by overseas buyers, professionals, business people from all over the world. How is it that they have the money to buy a second property overseas when their counterparts in the UK can not?
Than there is the 35% social housing where families get a town house with parking in front & garden with play area at the rear (value £850,000).
The people left out are the tax payers ( tax slaves) where at the lowest rate of tax every £1 attracts 46p in payments to the government (20p+12p+13.8p). How can some one save for a deposit let alone pay the rent? Most countries do not even receive that equivalent percentage at the HIGHEST rate of tax.
Even USA pays a pension of $25,000 to retiring tax payers with free PRIVATE health.
Yes, the state can get even further involved in providing houses but with whose money? Why not reduce taxes, give mortgage interest relief, tax allowances for children, reduce taxes on alcohol, beer, wines, Air passenger duty etc to European levels so that first time buyers can create effective demand which the supply side will provide. There are many articles on huge stocks of land held by private land banks.

Why should alcohol duty be any higher than Europe? UK government agenda is very clear, TAX, TAX & more TAX.

Can one individual in government decide to spend any amount of funds regardless? In any commercial organisation there would be proper rules & approved budgets. Expenditure would have to be justified & properly authorised.

My previous comment relates to the FSCS compensation scheme & not the Bank Levy. I should have read the article more carefully. Apologies!

Yes, it is time this party of the family silver was also sold. The sale proceeds should be in the form of shares paid to licence payers who have the the fee for 5 years or more. All the records are available with Beeb so it should be a fairly easy job & it would also cut out the profits that will undoubetdly go to the bankers in a privitisation like Royal mail.
commented on What you really pay on the 20p rate of tax 2015-03-09 00:42:57 +0000 · Flag
Government policy is very clear “Experiment & destroy”. If you had a maximum tax & paid it how long before the government changed the rules “Root & branch review” & made you pay it all over again. I have come to the conclusion some people work & some don’t. It is a matter of habit. In order to give up working & moving into a nice town house worth £850,000 in a new development, (also no travel expense, no baby sitter fees) one has to break a habit. It also means that you have to make a conscious choice. You have to break the habit of borrowing & than paying off loans. Some people like it (I am sadly one of those). I always get a good feeling repaying debt. I think the only way forward is to copy the tax & benefit system of another country where the individuals are happier. France for example has numerous taxes but a tax payer gets redundancy pay linked to contributions, another tax to repay sovereign debt, pension of Euro 30,000- from age 62 for a mid band earner. Their health system is one of the best in the world, so is their education & they have had fast trains for more than 20 years. I am not a Francophile but reading Wikipedia does make me wish I had learnt to speak French.

My friend has a flat in Spain. Local authority tax is on Euro 500 per annum (five hundred only) & the garbage is collected daily every night, without creating too much noise. Why not in the UK, where we pay 5 times as much.
