Last night Jonathan Isaby, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said:

"Housing allowances and free broadband are a scandalous way to spend taxpayers’ money when budgets are so tight. This sort of largesse isn’t found in the private sector and so there seems little justification for these additional perks at taxpayers’ expense. They should be cut back to reflect the current need to make urgent savings."
