UK wine tax to top £4bn for the first time - Financial Times

Dia Chakravarty, Political Director at the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "Like any consumption tax, wine duty is deeply regressive and hits those on lower incomes the hardest. Over 50% of what one pays for an average bottle of wine goes to the Treasury, with our wine duty being the 2nd highest in the EU. This is clearly bad news not just for consumers but also the leisure industry and the jobs that depend on it. If politicians are serious about helping families with their cost of living and businesses with creating jobs then cutting taxes on products like a bottle of wine would be a good place to start."
