MPs from Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire have been doing a brilliant job opposing the proposed introduction of VAT on static caravans. As I have previously mentioned, over 90 per cent of static caravans are manufactured in Hull and East Yorkshire, and slapping 20 per cent on the cost of them will have a devastating impact on the local economy. It will also impact on jobs in other parts of the country where the local economy relies heavily on caravan parks. Nationally, 7000 jobs are at risk.
An Early Day Motion will be heard in the Commons on Friday 25 May. To back this campaign here's what you can do. Write to your MP and urge them to back the Early Day Motion. The more letters and e-mails MPs get, the more likely they are to listen. You can also download a copy of the petition and get as many friends and family to sign it. Please be quick though, as the petition will be presented next Tuesday, and it has to be a paper petition - you can't sign in online.
This is what Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness had to say:
So please do what you can to stop this tax grab by George Osborne. We need lower, simpler taxes, and simplification should not be used as an excuse to extend the VAT net even wider.

This is what Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness had to say:
What we need is for constituents across the country to start lobbying their MPs by signing the petition. MPs listen to their constituents. Their letters are always at the top of my in-tray and if people can be mobilised to sign the petition that will make their representatives sit up and listen. We're better off having support across the country than having a lot of support in a few constituencies.
