Campaigners from the TaxPayers’ Alliance visited sites in Hampshire and Wiltshire today, Friday, as part of a roadshow raising awareness of the UK’s national debt, which is increasing by £4,410 per second or £380 million per day. Joining the TPA was John Glen MP, shadow paymaster general, who said: “it’s fantastic to have the TPA here in Salisbury to highlight the challenges that the government are not dealing with in terms of the national debt.”
A digital van displaying the national debt visited Salisbury, Southampton, Winchester, Emsworth and Godalming during the day. In Salisbury the group were joined by the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury and local MP John Glen, who also was a candidate for the chair of the Public Accounts Committee.
The previous roadshow, on 6th September, saw the group visit Royal Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Orpington, Sevenoaks and Purley.
The UK’s national debt is now approaching £2.6 trillion, with debt interest alone costing over £100 billion per year. A House of Lords report published this week warned that the national debt could become “unsustainable.”

William Yarwood, media campaign manager of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:
"Taxpayers in Salisbury will be horrified by the escalating national debt.
“With growing warnings that the national debt may soon be unsustainable, there is rightly fury from residents that successive governments have allowed the situation to spiral out of control.
“Rachel Reeves needs to urgently get a grip on the public finances at the upcoming budget.”
