Chesterfield Council had the highest bonus bill in 2022 of any council in the country, a TaxPayers' Alliance investigation revealed. The bonuses were paid to staff out of the council's Housing Revenue Account. 139 staff received a bonus meaning the average bonus was worth £18,000.
Speaking to the Derbyshire Times, our investigations campaign manager Elliot Keck said:
"These bumper bonuses are paid for by local residents.
"While households tighten their belts, council staff have been filling their pockets.
"The council should urgently explain why on earth they thought this spending was appropriate."
