Councils spend £700,000 on home internet for staff

UK councils spent £700,000 covering home internet costs from 2019 to 2023, a TPA investigation revealed. The highest spending council was North Hertfordshire, which spent £136,578 during this period.

 

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, which published the findings, our media campaign manager Conor Holohan said: 

"Taxpayers will be furious that they're subsidising these costs.

"Home internet access is an essential element of modern life and like any other basic living expenses, should be paid for by the person themselves.

"Councils should immediately cease these payments and insist that staff come into the office if they don't have internet at home."
