Recently my colleague Henry Wilson wrote about taxpayers in Crawley picking up a £600 bill for translating just one copy of a pointless glossy magazine into Urdu. Since then a supporter has been in touch with an example of a leaflet he received from his council.
The two page colour leaflet was sent out to residents in West Sussex to explain changes to street lighting in the county. The pamphlet details how it will be replacing old inefficient lights and replacing them with energy-efficient, unobtrusive ones.
Councils must look at ways they can produce these leaflets more cheaply. There is no doubt that these colourful booklets cost more than a simple A4 sheet in black and white would.
Cutting glossy leaflets is an easy saving all councils can make. And when councils do have important information for residents they should look for cheaper ways of making them aware.
