Empty Property Rates

Prior to 2007 empty industrial properties were exempt from Business Rates and commercial properties given relief and reductions, but now property owners are hit with business rates on properties which are empty with no rent coming in that can be used to pay the bill. Owners include pensioners holding a small property to top up their pension while potential owners are more hesitant to buy with the threat of high rates if their investment goes awry.
