Freedom of Information

We often mention the Freedom of Information Act on this website. It is an important tool to any campaigner and campaign group, and getting information from public bodies is not only your legal right, it is also very easy to do.

We have a template you can use. If you would like a copy, then let me know. There is also a great website - www.whatdotheyknow.com - that allows you to send freedom of information (FOI) requests. The website is very simple to use, and allows all of us to see what information you have requested.

For example, I had a look at FOI requests sent to Bradford Council this morning. I discovered that in 2010/11, £12,637.79 was spent on councillors' car parking in the NCP car park, Hall Ings, Bradford and £2,302.64 on lunches for councillors attending committee meetings. Not a large amount of money some would say, but why are taxpayers paying car parking fees for councillors and then feeding them? It would be interesting to find out how widespread this is around the country.

So why not go on to www.whatdotheyknow.com and find out if your council pays for councillors' parking charges and gives them a free lunch? You don't have to stop there. You can ask for any information you would like to know.

If you do, please let me know what results you get so we can highlight more examples of waste. It is your right to know how your money is spent. Make sure you use it.
