More than £3 million was handed out as bonuses to local government officials in London in 2022, a TaxPayers' Alliance investigation revealed. This included payments of as much as £2,200 per person from the Greater London Authority to staff working on the Queen's funeral. The largest bonus bill of London councils was Camden, which paid out £1.2 million as part of a "reward and recognition scheme."
Speaking to the Evening Standard, which published the findings, our investigations campaign manager Elliot Keck said:
“Londoners have been funding a bumper bonus bill for town hall staff.
"With taxes soaring to record highs, these handouts will be a kick in the teeth for local taxpayers.
"Council bosses should keep a lid on these payments.”
