Non-job of the Week

Guardian non-jobs 2009 6.8.09 There are nearly 500 jobs on offer in the government sector, plenty offering final salary pensions gold plated with taxpayers’ money.  Compare that with the £100 billion deficit in FTSE 100 private sector pensions and you can see the problem.

The tip of the iceberg this week is the non-job of the week, from the North West Development Agency:

RDA National Evaluation Manager
North West Development Agency
38,087 - £44,433 per annum plus £2,000 per annum London Weighting

To programme manage and coordinate the implementation of the Impact Evaluation Framework and production of the next Regional Development Agency (RDA) Impact Report by the nine English RDAs and to work with RDA Evaluation leads to share best practice and improve and embed their approach to evaluation of programmes, projects and policies.

This role will be working at the RDA Secretariat, which is a small team working on behalf of England’s nine Regional Development Agencies. Secretariat staff are employed by the North West Regional Development Agency and provide a service to all RDAs.”

Why would anyone earning £44,000 + need a ‘London Weighting’ allowance?  Moreover, why is there a coordinating RDA secretariat, aren’t these bodies meant to lobby for their regions? I know, it’s an expensive contradiction to have government lobbying government, but they exist so we may as well grapple with the flawed logic of it all…or try, at least.

The RDAs should be scrapped.  We’ve demonstrated how these bodies are a waste, the funding of which could cut small company business taxation, just what we need to dig our way out the recession.
