One MILLION teaching days lost to mental health sickness

A TaxPayers' Alliance investigation has discovered that teachers in local authority maintained schools have lost 1,023,956 days due to mental health sickness absences taken by 38,202 members of staff.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, which published these findings, our investigations campaign manager, Joanna Marchong said:

Parents and taxpayers alike will be deeply concerned by the rise in teachers taking time off due to mental health issues.

“Local authority-maintained schools often serve some of the most disadvantaged communities. The millions of days lost create a greater strain on already overstretched resources, disrupting children’s education and piling costs onto taxpayers.

“Town hall bosses must ensure that teachers can deliver the high-quality education that children deserve.”
