Open letter to candidates in the Cardiff South and Penarth by-election

On 15 November, a by-election will be held in the Cardiff South and Penarth Constituency. Former MP, Alun Michael, resigned last month and is currently campaigning as Labour's Police and Crime Commissioner for South Wales.

Below is a copy of a letter I have sent to candidates asking them questions our supporters in the constituency would like to ask them. We will publish the candidates' replies once we receive them.

Dear xxx,

You are receiving this e-mail because you are standing as a candidate in the forthcoming by-election in Cardiff South and Penarth. The TaxPayers' Alliance is writing to the Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat, Plaid Cymru, UKIP, and Green candidates.

We are living through difficult economic times, with many challenges. We all want to see growth in the economy, and with this in mind, on behalf on of our registered supporters in the constituency, and the wider electorate in general, we would like to ask you some questions. The questions and your answers will be published on our website.

1. Do you support a freeze in business rates in 2013 to help struggling businesses in the constituency?

2. Do you support the 5p levy on plastic bags (the so-called bag tax) introduced by the Welsh Government?

3. Would you support a campaign to introduce a ferry crossing between Cardiff and South West England? Do you think that would help businesses in the constituency?

4.The Government is committed to raising the tax free personal allowance to £10,000. Would you like to see this raised further, bringing more people out of direct taxation?

5. What wasteful areas of spending by the Welsh Government do you think could be cut?

We look forward to receiving your reply, and wish you all the best in your campaign.

Yours faithfully,

Lee Canning
Wales Coordinator, TaxPayers' Alliance
