Spending Review victory from our Town Hall Rich List

Earlier this month the groundbreaking Public Sector Rich List - a collaboration between the TaxPayers’ Alliance and Daily Mail - revealed the full scale of high pay in the public sector. A key part of this project was our annual town hall rich list which gives details just how many council executives are in receipt of six figure remuneration packages.

In yesterday’s Spending Review, the government committed to encouraging councils to get the wage bill for high earners down to a more reasonable level.

Local Government Efficiency

1.243 The median annual salary for a County Council, Metropolitan Borough, London Borough and Unitary Council Chief Executive is reportedly higher than the Prime Minister’s salary. The government will issue new guidance to local authorities to encourage them to rein in excessive salaries and do more to drive efficiencies for local taxpayers.

The TPA will be keeping a close eye on public sector pay to make sure that this does happen!
