Responding to the appointment of government commissioners to oversee Spelthorne council, Benjamin Elks, grassroots development manager of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:
“The appointment of government commissioners to oversee Spelthorne council is a damning indictment of failings by successive administrations.
“Years of town hall know-nothings gambling with property speculation have left local residents saddled with astronomical levels of debt, sucking scarce resources away from frontline services.
“Taxpayers in Spelthorne deserve a fresh start. The leader of the council should step aside and allow new leadership to restore stability and certainty for the people of Spelthorne.”

- The TaxPayers’ Alliance has previously highlighted the increasing number of council-owned non-residential properties left empty for part of a two-year period. A property owned by Spelthorne was the second most expensive property identified out of a list of 4,908. In 2021 the TPA warned that investments such as Spelthorne’s were a “disaster waiting to happen for local authority finances.”
