Responding to Kemi Badenoch’s speech at the Scottish Conservative party conference, John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:
“Kemi Badenoch is absolutely right to recognise the enormous material damage that windfall taxes on energy profits have done to the economy, particularly the economy in Scotland.
“The decision to levy such an arbitrary and capricious levy on the very same companies that power our homes and businesses was one of the last government’s most pointlessly destructive policies, which has delivered zilch for taxpayers but higher energy bills.
“If Labour want to bring down the desperately high energy bills in this country, they should listen to the leader of the opposition and bring forward the expiry of these taxes to the end of 2025.”
