Responding to Kemi Badenoch's speech at Conservative Party Conference, John O'Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:
“The Conservative leader is right to be hammering home the urgent need to crack down on the country’s unsustainable debt.
“But taxpayers are tired of hearing about what invariably end up being malleable fiscal rules, instead of concrete, detailed plans for how and where politicians intend to cut down on spending, boost public sector productivity and simplify and reduce the tax burden.
“To avoid the golden rule being a gimmick, the Conservative opposition need to be open and honest with the public about just how challenging the decisions on spending are going to be in order to get the finances back on track."
Responding to Kemi Badenoch’s pledge to scrap stamp duty, Elliot Keck, head of campaigns at the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said:
“Taxpayers will be relieved to finally hear a major political party pledge the full abolition of stamp duty, a leading contender for Britain’s worst, most economically damaging tax.”
