The main green taxes in the UK cost taxpayers £17.8 billion in 2023-24, the TaxPayers’ Alliance has revealed.
This comes in response to the leader of the opposition, Kemi Badenoch's speech warning about Britain's “impossible” plans to achieve net zero by 2050.
The green tax burden, which includes the climate change levy, carbon price floor, environmental levies and emissions trading scheme, will rise to £19.4 billion by 2026-27.
Responding to the leader of the opposition, Kemi Badenoch’s speech on energy security and net zero, John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:
“Taxpayers will be relieved to hear the Conservatives finally own up to the impossible nature of the net zero plans that they so relentlessly pushed while in power.
“Britain's energy policy has only served to decimate British industry and relentlessly squeeze household budgets, leaving the country poorer and more insecure.
“If Kemi wants to regain the trust of voters she needs to make sure that the Conservative's policy platform matches her welcome rhetoric, including by taking action on the green tax burden.”
