Responding to an embargoed briefing of NAO head’s annual speech in parliament tomorrow, John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:
“The National Audit Office is an increasing rarity now in the public sector, given its relentless focus on the core issues actually impacting the effectiveness of government.
“It is the shocking levels of productivity since the turn of the century, and in particular since the pandemic, that is leading to ministers increasingly turning to taxpayers to bail out bureaucrats for their ever more lackluster performance.
“Ministers should be hanging on every word Gareth Davies says in his speech and ensuring that his message on productivity is hammered home in their departments.”
