Responding to Rachel Reeves’ review of the public finances, John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:
“A fiscal statement so focused rhetorically on overspending will be music to the ears of many taxpayers, particularly given the catastrophic level of public sector debt.
“But it is impossible to marry this with the huge spending commitments the new government has already announced, whether it be on public sector pay, yet more quangos or international aid.
“Labour should ensure that its spending choices don’t simply take with one hand to give with another.”
Responding to Rachel Reeves scrapping winter fuel payments, John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:
“Reeves deserves praise for tackling this hugely costly benefit which goes to all pensioners, rich or poor.”
