TaxPayers’ Alliance responds to UK borrowing hitting highest level since 2020

For immediate release

Responding to UK borrowing hitting the highest level since 2020, Darwin Friend, head of research of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:

“Whether through incompetence or recklessness, these latest figures demonstrate that the government has completely lost control of the public finances, if it ever had any control to begin with.

“All of that talk of fiscal discipline and iron-clad rules in opposition has been proven to be little more than a PR stunt to trick the electorate into thinking that Labour had a plan that went beyond simply showering ever more taxpayer money on the public sector.

“Reeves and Starmer now need to own up to the mess they have made and drastically alter course, with multi-year freezes on public sector pay and significant cuts to welfare spending now urgently needed.”
