Today's Public Accounts Committee report on HMRC underlines the need for tax simplification

Commenting on the publication today by the Public Accounts Committee of its latest report, HMRC tax collection: Annual Report & Accounts 2012-13, Jonathan Isaby, Political Director of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:

"It's little wonder that the amount of tax being collected is going down, given that our hideously complex tax code makes it easy for those with well-paid accountants to run rings around the taxman. But politicians should stop pontificating about individual cases and blaming HMRC for inaction because the power to make our tax system simpler and fairer lies squarely in their hands: they are the ones who designed the system and have been making it ever more complex and opaque by tinkering with it at every Budget for decades. Until politicians act to make the system simpler and more transparent, the public are never going to have the confidence that everyone is paying their fair share and that the right amount of tax being collected."
