TPA backs calls for Commons Budget Committee

For Immediate Release

Responding to the news that the House of Commons Procedure Committee is calling for the establishment of a Budget Committee to properly scrutinise government spending plans, Mike Denham, Chairman of the TaxPayers’ Alliance said:

"This report is a big win for the taxpayers of tomorrow.

"Proper oversight of government plans to spend taxpayers' cash are long overdue. While we've muddled along for many years, it's about time our out-of-date system caught up to other democracies, like Australia, and let parliament probe public sector budgets - well in advance of a single penny being spent. As we warned in this inquiry, the current setup leaves MPs unable to scrutinise spending until cash has already been wasted.

"We call on the Commons to take up the challenge and accept these recommendations as soon as possible."
