Whitehall departments spent £182 million on golden goodbyes in 2021/22, a TaxPayers' Alliance investigation found. As part of this 389 former staff received packages worth over £100,000, with 66 receiving more than £150,000.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, which published the findings, Elliot Keck, investigations campaign manager at the TaxPayers' Alliance said:
"These golden goodbyes will be a kick in the teeth for taxpayers.
"While households scrimp and save, Whitehall fat cats are trousering massive exit payments.
"The government should act to rein in these bumper payouts."
