The project to build a luxury bed and breakfast in River Road in Arundel is to be abandoned, following a meeting of the Economy Committee at Arun District Council last night, in a significant grassroots win for the TaxPayers’ Alliance (TPA).
The TPA visited Arundel on two occasions (January 9th and 24th) to collect signatures for a letter to Cllr Grant Roberts, who was at the time the local representative for the area and who also sat on the Economy Committee, the decision making body in charge of the scheme.
More than 300 verified residents in Arundel signed the letter, which warned of the “real risk that this investment fails, given the highly seasonal nature of UK tourism and the luxury nature of the proposed property.” It also cited the almost “unanimous opposition” from local residents.
Speaking during the committee meeting, Cllr James Walsh said he had “never had such a unanimity of views from the people of Arundel.”
Conor Holohan, media campaign manager of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:
“Residents will be relieved that this bonkers scheme is being scrapped.
“The numbers never added up, and local taxpayers were rightly worried they would be left to pick up the pieces when it all went wrong.
“Town hall bosses should consider using the funds allocated for this project to freeze council tax instead.”
