This morning the TaxPayers' Alliance (TPA) visited City Hall in a white van to protest the introduction of the new Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). TPA staff plastered a Ford Transit van with placards calling on Mayor Khan to scrap this charge, which will burden hard working tradesmen with yet another tax.
The TPA supports proposals to immediately scrap the ULEZ charges, or introduce a soft landing scheme to give drivers time to prepare for the changes.
James Roberts, political director of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said:
"Many drivers across London have no idea that they are about to be walloped with the Mayor’s new van tax.
Improving air quality is a noble aim, but slapping a stealth charge on sole traders is the wrong way to do it. ULEZ will hit everything from buses to businesses and city commuters, and risks creating an ultra low enterprise zone.
Sadiq should scrap his van tax, or at least sort out a soft start to the scheme, granting drivers a grace period to prepare for the new charges."
