TaxPayers' Alliance in York today opposing Council Tax increase

At a time when many residents are struggling with the rising cost of living, Council Tax is second only to VAT as the most burdensome tax for the poorest households. The Government has offered local authorities a grant if they freeze Council Tax next year. However, York City Council has rejected this offer and instead plans a rise of at least 2 per cent. The Council also refused a similar grant this year, and increased Council Tax by 2.9%.

Today we are holding a protest against this rise at St Helen's Square in York (near Betty's Tea Rooms) at 12.30pm. If you are in the area, please come along and offer your support. You are more than welcome to join the protest and help us to hand out leaflets to local people explaining why we are protesting.

Most councils across the country will be freezing or reducing Council Tax next year. Please support us in our campaign to persuade York City Council to do the same!
