TaxPayers’ Alliance responds to the fiscal statement

For immediate release

Responding to the fiscal statement, John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:

“These plans look set to prolong the crippling cost of government crisis.

“Taxpayers will take a kicking over the coming years to pay for a raft of spending increases, with most tough decisions seemingly kicked into the long grass.

“The government should have set out how they will get costs under control, not compounded the misery of sky-high inflation with tax hikes on working families.”

Responding to the freezing of income tax thresholds, John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:

“Freezing thresholds will mean any hard-fought pay rises will go straight into the chancellor’s pocket.

“With inflation already bludgeoning Brits, the government has guaranteed years of falling living standards and sluggish growth.

“Politicians must stop using smoke and mirrors to fleece working taxpayers for more of their hard-earned money.”

Responding to the rise in the council tax cap, John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:

“Today’s council tax bombshell will hit household budgets hard.

“Raising the cap on council tax rises will leave ratepayers exposed to surging bills, without recourse to a referendum on wasteful local authority plans.

“Councils that refuse to keep costs down should have to justify bumper rises at the ballot box.”
